Reddit is one of the largest community platforms on the internet.

Its Developer Platform lets developers build apps and games that run natively inside Reddit, and it has outgrown its experimental phase: "We're actually not considered a bet anymore. We're part of the fabric of Reddit," says Stacy Souza, the Senior Technical Writer behind its documentation.

Challenge

Reddit's Developer Platform team grew from a small group to a large organization almost overnight, and everyone had an opinion about the docs. Suggestions poured in through the docs channel, each treated as urgent: a broken link here, a rewrite proposal there, a returning engineer with a new idea for how everything should be structured. The docs were even open sourced so anyone could contribute.

The result was noise. Every piece of feedback became a brush fire, and there was no objective way to decide what actually mattered. "I'm not dropping everything to go put out your little fire," as Stacy puts it. What the team needed was a way to make documentation decisions based on what developers were actually asking, not on whoever spoke loudest.

There was a second, older problem underneath it: documentation work is notoriously hard to measure. Technical writers have historically had no good metrics to demonstrate their impact, which makes it hard to prioritize work and hard to show the value of docs to the wider company.

Solution

Reddit deployed Kapa on its developer documentation, giving every developer building on the platform instant, source-cited answers grounded in the current docs.

Beyond answering questions, Kapa became the data layer for how the docs team operates. Every Monday morning, Kapa's weekly performance stats land in Stacy's inbox and set the agenda for the week: what developers asked, what was resolved, and where the gaps are. The coverage gaps report and suggestions surface not just missing documentation but holes in Reddit's own processes, like areas where the team had not yet decided how to message a feature to developers.

That data turned docs prioritization from opinion-driven to evidence-driven. Working with the head of developer relations, Stacy now points to Kapa's data to set priorities: "Here are the priorities for the week. Here's what we're working on, because these are the questions people are asking." Feedback in the docs channel gets weighed against what developers actually struggle with, and the noise falls away.

Results

Kapa gave Reddit's documentation something technical writers rarely have: hard numbers.

The next step is agents. Reddit is enabling Kapa's docs MCP server so coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor can ground themselves in the Developer Platform docs as developers build, with agent traffic analytics revealing which tools query the docs and where they hit dead ends.

That fits a broader push: Stacy is spending the next six months turning GEO best practices into standards for Reddit's docs, making them as answerable for agents as they are for humans.
